H to O

Many of you should be aware of the benefits of drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Indeed, several years ago, the government campaigned to raise awareness on the subject. In this they gave rather spurious advice about drinking 8 cups a day; an arbitrary amount without any scientific basis. However since then there has been some counter-research which instead suggests that we get most of the water we need from the food we eat. Who should be believe?

Benefits

Regardless, there are a number of benefits to drinking water which we do know of, whether backed by science or based on experience or otherwise. Such as:

  • Reducing the production of Free Radicals – often associated with the Aging Process.
  • Avoiding Water Retention (sometimes referred to as the Camel Effect) – which can manifest itself as pockets of water seen under the skin, particularly in the back; sometimes mistaken for fat.
  • Speeding up your metabolism – especially drinking cold water, since it requires energy to be warmed up.
  • Assisting weight-loss – making you feel full and so helps to avoid snacking.
  • Preventing dehydration – which can make you feel fatigued especially during exercise.
  • Avoiding muscle cramps – can aid in recovery and stamina.
  • Hydrating the skin – dehydration thins the skin, which can exaggerate the appearance of Cellulite, for example.

Personally, I try to drink at least 2 litres (0.5 gallons) a day, in addition to what I drink during a workout. I have found that this keeps me sharp at work, but also gives me more stamina during a workout. A good recipe for the Gym-life-balance.

In summary

So whomever you believe, being well hydrated is certainly beneficial. Whether food provides enough, who knows; but one thing is for sure, water is an vital part of your diet and it will do you no harm to drink a good amount anyway.
